Old Portal and the Scaloni

THE ENTRANCE TO THE TOWN

The portal, still today well preserved, is the historic entrance to the old city . It has two openings: the main one,surmounted by the symbol  of the dukes Delli Monti Sanfelice, the secondary one , characterized by a low arch, was used for defense and surveillance. Above the main door there are five battlements, two of which support stone decorations. For centuries the only way to reach the village was through  “staircases”, representing still today one of the few examples of uphill wide and low steps.
